    61 | A Useful Instrument

Today’s podcast is all about one of my favorite quotes! I even centered an entire yoga class around it, because our body’s are useful instruments, and we need to remember that. Are we neglecting our body, or are we making it a useful instrument? Today, that is just what we are going to talk about.

Our body is our transporter for our spirit and soul, and how we feel in our body in connected to how we feel in our mind. Our body is not here only for aesthetics, they are here to carry us with integrity and curiourisity, and as calibrators of energy.

How are our bodies comparable to instruments?

Our body is like a tuning fork for our inner vibration.

By playing our body well, we receive great feedback.

Musical instruments vibrate, we too are instruments of vibration. When we feel low and dull, that is a lack of high vibration; when we feel bright is when our vibration is high.

    Questions to ask yourself:

How are you eating? Drinking? Are you sleeping enough? Are you moving with joy?

  • 60 | The Power Of The Pause

60 | The Power Of The Pause

Today we are talking about the incredible power that pausing has on our mind, body, and movement practice. The pause is important because it gives us the chance for so many things, especially in our very hurried lives. Today we are talking about the benefits of pausing, and what ways we can all add more pause to our lives.

    What is a pause?

Pausing is to stop something temporarily, and can be used in many situations; talking, moving, etc.

What are the benefits of pausing?

Pausing helps you feel better in your body, because we don’t even realize how we are holding our emotions, and how they are affecting our bodies. Pausing allows us this sense of realizing what our body needs. Family and friends will benefit as well, because it helps our response and reaction to different scenarios, rather than being quick to respond a way that we shouldn’t have. Pausing also helps us better connect to ourselves, and listen to what we truly need, want, and desire. A pause can help you take a different, more compassionate route than you may normally have gone.

  • 59 | Q&A with Lara

    59 | Q&A with Lara

I get a lot of questions from listeners, yoga teachers, and followers I have on social media quite often, so I wanted to take today to answer a few of them. My hope is that in answering these on my podcast, this helps someone else as well!

I got quite a few questions regarding carpal tunnel, and I’d like to address the bulk of those here.

Carpal tunnel is right along the wrist joint, where all the tendons from the muscle in the forearm come in to the hand. There are also nerves that run through this tunnel area. Doing the same movement over and over can overstress the tendons, so that they can’t do the work, causing compressed inflammation. In order to try and prevent this, we need to balance out the movements that we’re doing. Frequently stretch your wrist in the opposite direction. Weight bearing will also be helpful with the inflammation.

What is the best way to access/strengthen the core?

The core is everything that is supporting your exoskeleton, so there are many ways to strengthen this area. My recommendation is to go and take my yoga classes on my daily LYT platform because they are focused on integrating the core.

How do you feel about demoing while teaching?

For my online videos I find that it is really helpful to have me doing my class as I explain the movement because it gives a better visual. I do find that this is better for my teaching in person as well. Outside of my level 3 Groove class though, I only demo when it is absolutely necessary. I like to see how my verbal cues and instruction land with my students.

Any tips on communicating with physical therapists and other body workers to get the most out of a session?

Choose wisely who you are going to be spending your time with and your money on. Be very communicative on what you know about your body; your sensitivities, what you like or what you don’t, etc. Be open and straightforward on the goals that you have while seeing the professional.

  • 58 | The Simple Stitch

    58 | The Simple Stitch

In today’s episode, I’m sharing a concept that I came up with for a class that’s available on my LYT Daily. The simple stitch is used to help people identify that the act of starting is really very powerful. A lot of people reach out to me wanting to make changes in different facets of their lives, knowing what changes to make, but feeling overwhelmed at the road ahead. This episode will help you understand that it doesn’t need to be daunting to start something new and make a change, and that we all start at step one.

    What is the simple stitch?

It’s the idea that whatever we start with, we must start with the basics. We can’t overlook this. The stitch, in yoga, is the way of bringing in awareness to your central core.

    • S: Start small
    • T: Take action
    • I: Identify the outcome
    • T: Take momentum
    • C: Complete your first row
    • H: Harness your enthusiasm and grow

  • 57 | What Is The Deal With The Moon?

57 | What Is The Deal With The Moon?

Today’s topic is all about the moon! In terms of movement, the moon is such a great example of movement and change. The moon is shifting, and it allows us to track our days by each shift that it makes in its alignment. I thought that today would be a great opportunity to speak about the beautiful movement of the moon and her phases, and what we can take away from it all.

The moon’s phases are a reflection of how much of the surface is being illuminated by the sun. Many of us are aware of the different phases of the moon, but not a lot know what these phases mean energetically.

The new moon is the time where the moon is completely dark, and this is energetically a time of rebirth and starting over. Many people set intentions, write out goals, and start projects around this phase.

The waxing crescent moon phase is next, which indicates forward and aspiring motion. At this time, people begin to identify more where they need to focus in their new goals and intentions.

The first quarter phase, or half moon, is a symbolic time of both rooting down and expanding. I like to remember one of my favorite yoga poses, half moon, here because it holds similar energetic meaning.

In the waxing gibbous moon phase, we are able to really see and feel our intentions comes to fruition. This is a great time to journal about attaining what you want, and going out to get it.

Now we reach the full moon, where the earth, moon, and sun are aligned. This is a great time to transform and welcome in abundance. After this phase, the moon begins to diminish, which is why people recommend to energetically release things that are no longer of service to you.

The waning gibbous is known to bring energy for better communications and revelations.

After this, we reach another half moon phase, but this time it is decreasing in its illumination. This is a time where we begin to reflect on what the full moon phase brought us, and reevaluate for the future.

  • 56 | Focus

    56 | Focus

Today’s episode is all about focus! We hear this word, focus, often as it is an important idea and practice. Focus itself is the fundamental key for productivity. Today I’m sharing what focus means to me, and why it’s so important in life and in our movement practice.

The ability to focus is the key to getting things done because it allows lock into one focal point without being distracted by other things around it. We live in a time where we believe that multitasking is possible, when it actually is not.

How do we direct our energy?

Write out your goals and priorities. Now really narrow in on the most important ones out of your list. This will help you realize where your focus needs to be, and help you narrow it down.

How do we eliminate our distractions?

Pick the time of day that you know you focus best. Now think of the things that distract you, our phones are BIG distractions. Be sure that environment in which you need to be focused is cleared of excess distractions as well.

When practicing movement, it’s important to focus on your gaze; where are you looking? It’s also important to focus on your core, as this not only draws you in, but it also helps in releasing other distractions that your mind may create. Focusing on your breath by creating a rhythm to cultivate a deeper connection to the movement you are doing.

    Don’t worry, be happy.

When we can be more focused, it will make us feel more content and happy. Focus isn’t just an idea for better business, it’s also to ensure that we are living our best life. By focusing on what truly matters, we will find more joy and quality in our lives.

  • 55 | Traveling As A Vegan

    55 | Traveling As A Vegan

Today’s podcast is all about traveling while vegan! This episode was inspired by my love of travel, but also my trip to Costa Rica, and how I eat when I am not home. For those of us who do have different lifestyle choices– vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc– it can be a little more trying when you aren’t in your own home, cooking your own meals! My hope is that with this episode, I can help provide insight to how I travel as a vegan, and hopefully make your future trips that much easier.

I have been vegan for almost 18 years now, and the technology that we have today does make being vegan while on the road and traveling, much more simple. There are many apps that help! I use Happy Cow to help me know what places have vegan options nearby my location.

When traveling, we often stay at Bed and Breakfasts, and in other countries where the hosts may not know what veganism is– kindly let them know what you can and can’t consume. Be open to offering suggestions. Sometimes we do have to bring our own staples, depending on where we travel.

I don’t agree when people say that being adaptable when traveling means eating as the culture eats, out of respect. I don’t think that it’s disrespectful at all to maintain your ethical beliefs. Being adaptable, to me, means being open to the fact that your options may look different than you expected.

  • 54 | Functional Stretching & Why It’s Important

    54 | Functional Stretching & Why It’s Important

Today I am going to discuss stretching! I’ll be talking about why stretching is so important, and I share my physical therapist hacks for stretching as well. This episode is for everyone from the runner, to the yogi, and all other active and non-active realms.

What is stretching? What are the misconceptions?

Stretching is helping your body get longer, more free, and to reduce muscular tension. There are so many different things that people think of when they hear “stretch”– that it will make them stronger, give them deeper ranges in yoga, and so on.

What are the benefits of stretching?

Stretching improves flexibility, when we stretch well. This could lead to improving our range of motion, which leads to a decrease risk of harming or injuring other joints. Stretching also enables the muscles to work more effectively.

    Why is core strength important?

Core strength is going to help provide better protection for your lower back, while giving more strength and power in your legs, and more stability throughout your entire trunk. This will also improve your posture, which has an extremely positive ripple effect throughout your entire body.

When you look at your own practice, or classes you teach and/or take, ask yourself:

    • Am I changing the way I’m feeling in my life?
    • Am I feeling less pull in my low back?
