    69 | Don’t Be A Stagnant Pond

Today’s episode is all about movement. Surprise! I’m using the concept of stagnant waters to really show you that it teaches us about our own body. As you know, water that has been sitting for awhile can begin to not smell well, and even begin to grow things in it– this is very much like our own body. Over 70% of our body is water, and you can see how that shows stagnancy is something we can have within us as well.

    What does stagnant mean?

Lacking from movement; stale. Not growing or changing; without force or vitality.

Why is the lymphatic system important?

Our lymphatic system is the network of tissues and organs that are made up of our lymph vessels, nodes, and fluid. It’s our drainage system for the body, is crucial for fighting infection, and it depends on movement. Without movement, you’ll have a backup of fluids, which can cause so many internal and external issues.

Signs that the lymphatic system isn’t working well:

    • Headaches
    • Brain fog
    • Lack of energy
    • Swollen lymph nodes or tonsils
    • Mucus
    • Drainage
    • Constipation
    • Bloating / heaviness
    • Acne

What to do to help the lymphatic system:

    • Move, move, move!
    • Hydrate well
    • Eat well
    • Less stress
    • Rest

  • 068 | Raise Your Hand With Ease

068 | Raise Your Hand With Ease

Today’s podcast is all about lifting your arms pain free and easily, which may sound simple, but this isn’t necessarily the case. We were born to be able to lift our arms up and above us, as well as around in a complete circle, but a lot of people struggle with this movement. In today’s conversation, I’m sharing how to get your arms to be able to complete this movement, and why it’s so important.

The movements that occur in the shoulder alone are extremely complex, making the act of reaching the arm up towards the ceiling complex in its own right. For those who don’t have the best posture, or don’t keep the shoulder and surrounding shoulder specific muscles engaged, they could have a difficult time reaching their arms up and above themselves.

To reach our arms up, we need to:

    • Work on our posture
    • Stand taller
    • Allow mobility in the scapula
    • Stability in the scapula

What is required to bring your arm up overhead?

Better posture. To go from your arm at 90 degrees, to your arm in line with your ear, this requires movement at the scapula. It’s in the area from the last 90 – 180 degrees that something can be compressed, even without you knowing. This is more widely known as rotator cuff syndrome.

    How do we remedy this?

At 90 degrees, reach your arm straight out in front of you with your thumb turned up; now reach forward more, elongating your arm– reach from your scapula, and now reach up overhead.

    &

Be quiet, and respond with compassion.

  • 66 | Beginner’s Mind

Today’s podcast is all about embracing the beginner’s mind without always labeling ourselves as beginners. In Zen Buddhism, the beginner’s mind is thought of as something we should aspire and practice to have. It’s time we stop looking at being a beginner as something we are ashamed of, and see it more as an opportunity!

What does it mean to have a beginner’s mind?

A beginner is someone learning something from fresh eyes. It’s powerful to live a life with a curious mind! The school system can unfortunately rid us of this mindset from a young age.

When you have a more closed mind, the fear stops you from assuming you don’t know something, whereas the beginner’s mind sees the unknown as an opportunity to learn.

Are you labeling yourself as a beginner in a positive sense of the word, or in a negative sense?

Look in your life and see where you can be a beginner. Having this mindset can help you grow! Pick anything; cooking, singing, movement, where you feel challenged but reframe your mindset to viewing this as an opportunity to be a kid again.

  • 65 | What Mistakes Can Teach Us

65 | What Mistakes Can Teach Us

Today’s podcast was inspired by a recent mistake that I made while on the road with my daughter, looking at colleges. I made a mistake when I put gas in our car, I accidently filled it up with diesel fuel instead of regular. Sure, it made me feel silly, but rather than get down on myself, I looked for the lesson.

What to ask when you make a mistake:

    • What is the lesson in this mistake?

    Things to think of:

    • Paying attention
    • When you’re tired, pay attention even more
    • Surround yourself with people who support you
    • Listen to the intuitive feelings you have

  • 64 | How A Good College Can Help You Pick A Good Yoga Class

64 | How A Good College Can Help You Pick A Good Yoga Class

Today’s episode is inspired by my daughter searching for what college she’ll be attending! We’re looking at what each school has to offer beyond the education, and it made me think of what I recommend as a yoga teacher. There are a lot of similarities between what you may be looking for in a yoga class, and what you may be looking for in a college setting, and today I’m going to share my thoughts!

Here are a few things to ponder when searching for a new movement class, instructor, or even a college:

    1. When looking for a movement class (or college), don’t be seduced by the advertising.
    2. The strong sense of knowledge and curiosity is important.
    3. Do you sense that the people in the class (or college) are happy to be there?
    4. Do you feel like you are being seen?

  • 63 | Progress Not Perfect

    63 | Progress Not Perfect

We all have experienced the strive for perfection, and how it can actually get in the way of real progress. I see this a lot in yoga practice, where people have a perfectionist mindset for their practice, and I believe that can be really limiting. Today we are going to talk through the importance of releasing the illusion of perfection, and replacing it with the strive of progress.

Applying progress practice to your movement practice:

    1. Focus on the effort
    2. Recognize the shifts that have happened
    3. Start simple + start soon
    4. Be okay with mistakes

Applying these steps in your life, career, and even in your children’s lives, can really help you grow and have a better mindset (and more fun) while on the road to whatever your goals may be.

  • 62 | Getting Out Of A Slump

    62 | Getting Out Of A Slump

For today’s episode, I wanted to address how to get out of a slump. Being in a slump can be a physical thing, an emotional thing, professional, or even a creative thing! A slump is a feeling of being stuck, sort of like a blockage that you feel you can’t move past. We all can get stuck in the slump, and today, I’m going to share with you why I believe it’s important to do so.

By definition, a slump is the removal of the slope’s physical support, which provokes a mass-wasting event. This is so similar to the body! When we remove our support structure, we feel slumpy.

What are the ways to get out of a slump?

It’s similar to getting out of any space where you aren’t feeling as enthusiastic as you once were.

    • Identify your mindset
    • Identify who can help you if you need it
    • Think of the factors that may have led you to the slump
    • How is your posture?
    • Identify your motivators

Stress is a big factor for a lot of slump’s to begin. When stress builds up, it’s important to find ways to destress yourself.

Opening up your body, and paying attention to your breathing can help you feel better, which can then in turn get you out of your slump.
