237 | Mobility & Movement for the Everyman | with Ryan “Fitzie” Fitzpatrick

Today on the show we have a friend of mine, Ryan Fitzpatrick — or as I know him, Fitzie. He’s a UPS driver, a yoga instructor, a philosopher, an amazing human being, and an incredible teacher. But, as an essential worker during this pandemic, Fitzie has his hands full.

People are channeling their stress during these times in whatever way they can, and for many, that translates into unsafe driving. We talk all about how Fitzie is coping with the stress himself, working to help blue-collar workers take care of their bodies, and building a practice of meditation.

235 | How to move through your feelings

We can get our feelings trapped inside for a variety of reasons — whether it’s a cultural thing, we’ve been conditioned not to express ourselves, or something else — but how do we move feelings out instead of letting them harbor within ourselves?

There are always going to be hardships in life. That’s just part of the gig. So we need to learn how to move through those hard times and come out on the other side stronger, lighter, and brighter.

  • 232 | Willingness

It can be hard to find motivation in the middle of a pandemic. When I’m struggling with motivation, I look for some type of inspiration around me. That inspiration, for me, was a quote about willingness: “In the willingness to feel, there is healing. In the choice not to closet, cast aside, or deny experience, energy is freed and I dive deeper into life. There may be maturity in choosing not to act, but there are no rewards for suppression and denial. To be fully alive is to say yes to the wide array of human feelings. When I soften, release, and breathe, I discover that I am more than what I think, feel, reason, or believe.”

This quote speaks to the willingness to feel, to be more open and committed, and to grow. Having willingness in our hearts and our actions, in this instance, may mean that we are determined not to shut down or bury our heads in the sand while also not giving in to despair. Take a moment to examine your day-to-day actions and identify the ones that aren’t serving you anymore, and have a willingness to make those changes.

231 | How to be a Person | with Heather Havrilesky

Heather Havrilesky is a writer and one of my oldest and best friends. She is clever, she is beautiful, and she is wickedly funny.

Her first book, a memoir, is called Disaster Preparedness, and it was inspired by a realization that the world was much more fragile than people would let on, or that the adults in our life as a kid did not have as much of a handle on things as we thought.

We talk about how to stay fit and creative when sheltering in place (while still giving yourself some grace and slack), the difficult things about marriage, and dealing with the feeling of uncertainty.
